A School of Hope

Based on partial replication of San Diego, California’s High Tech High and best practice research of successful schools nationwide, New Hope Academy Charter School created an academic model that involves a specific target population – students who are at risk for becoming faceless, engulfed in an academic world where they feel little to no connection. The focus is on students who have traditionally been underserved and underrepresented in future careers.

To achieve this, we created four cornerstones on which our school is built on:
1. Rigorous Academic Standards
2. Leadership Development
3. State of the Art Technology
4. Character Education

R
igorous Academic Standards

Upon admission, students are given diagnostic and nationally recognized tests to ascertain their current academic levels. An in depth educational profile is developed by Pennsylvania certified teachers who are highly qualified. Included in the profile is the student individual learning style and strategies to assist the student in reaching his/her full potential. Classes are limited to 20 and are based on block scheduling except for Language Arts and Math which are year long classes. PSSA instruction and practice are included daily. Computer technology is incorporated across the curriculum.

Leadership Development
A strong emphasis is placed on leadership development. We have a leadership void in our country and we need to begin to train leaders in our schools. As John Maxwell states, “Everything rises and falls on leadership.” All 7th through 10th graders are required to become involved in community services projects, planning and engaging in areas that will increase their leadership skills. 11th graders job shadow proven leaders in the community and 12th graders select internships which will give them experience in a career avenue of choice.

State of the Art Technology
In order to be successful in the 21st century’s global society, students must become proficient in the variety of technologies available. Students at New Hope Academy Charter School are required to begin a digital portfolio upon admittance which will be updated periodically through to graduate. Classes are available both as requirements and electives to increase student skill and awareness.

Character Education
It is essential that students become caring, thoughtful, ethical, and respectful citizens. An Advisory Group of no more than 7 students are assigned to a teacher who will guide them in this area. Advisory Groups will provide students with the opportunity to become well known to both a staff person and the peers within the group.
